Bay City Volunteer Fire Department, Bay City Police Department, and Bay City Fire Marshal were sent to a grass fire at 1714 Spruce at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16.
The resident was using his smoker to cook some meat, and the heat ignited grass in the back yard.
The fire was confined to the tall grass in the back yard and did not damage the residence or the surrounding fence, said Fire Marshal Dan Shook.
In this case, the damage was limited to only grass, but could have caused considerable damage had the fire department not responded quickly.
Shooks reminds residents to ensure they keep their lawns groomed.
Bay City ordinance requires that all grass and weeds be kept to a maximum height of 12”.
This ordinance not only keeps Bay City beautiful, but it also protects from brush fires that may come close to homes, the fire marshal said.
